How Many Kings

This Christmas was a busy time for us. We moved from one event to the next like clock work. And when you happen to be a pastor's wife one of the things that you do a lot, is host people (a lot of people). So in the midst of events and hosting people, I was consciously making an effort to think of IndiAanya's  topic for January which was to write about a favourite movie or song that was meaningful to us over the last year.

The song that comes to my mind, which also happens to be one of my favourites is called How Many Kings by Downhere. And although it's technically a Christmas song, I have loved listening to it all through the year.

I remember very clearly the first time I heard this song was at a Christmas Eve service when I was walking around with my new born. Unable to hear the sermon I was quite frustrated. But when this song started playing, the words left me feeling mesmerised. The questions in the chorus seemed to be directed toward me.

These are the words of the song:

Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe, after all we've projected,
A child in a manger?
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother's shawl
Just a child
Is this who we've waited for? 'cause
How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Bringing our gifts for the newborn Saviour
All that we have, whether costly or meek
Because we believe.
Gold for his honour, and frankincense for his pleasure
And myrrh for the cross he will suffer
Do you believe?
Is this who we've waited for?
All for me
All for you

Every time I hear this song and the chorus comes along I think of heads of states and prime misters and presidents and know for sure that no one might even lift a finger to help me, let alone give up their life for me, yet there is this God, who gave up his life so that I could live a full life eternally. This is the gospel of our Saviour the Lord Jesus.

The King of kings stepped down from his throne
The Lord of lords abandoned his home
The Greatest became the least for me.
One God poured out his heart
To romance a world that is torn all apart
One Father gave up his Son for me.

Only One did that for me!

May I invite you to enter this new year with confidence in our Saviour and King.
